A man was arrested in Beverly Beach after deputies discovered sea turtle eggs and multiple illegal substances inside a van parked along North Ocean Shore Boulevard.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, 53-year-old Wesley Winters was taken into custody Sunday after deputies found him in violation of a no-contact order related to a nearby residence. When approached by deputies, Winters was asleep inside the van parked outside the home.
While speaking with Winters, a deputy noticed several white and tan orbs on the vehicle’s floorboard between his feet. These were later identified as sea turtle eggs. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was called to the scene.
As the deputy began collecting the sea turtle eggs for evidence, he observed a marijuana bowl near the vehicle. Winters allowed deputies to search the van, leading to the discovery of methamphetamine, fentanyl, marijuana, alprazolam, a metal pipe, and additional drug paraphernalia.
Winters told FWC officers the sea turtle eggs were from two nests he believed had been washed away and thought the eggs were no longer viable.
He now faces multiple charges, including possession of fentanyl, methamphetamine, marijuana (under 20 grams), alprazolam, and drug paraphernalia, as well as violating a no-contact order. Additional misdemeanor and felony charges were filed for the unlawful possession and disturbance of protected sea turtle eggs.
The investigation is ongoing.
