A striking scene unfolded off the coast of an Iranian island, where the shoreline transformed into a deep crimson hue following heavy rainfall. The phenomenon, resembling something out of a biblical tale, has captivated millions online.
Footage of this eerie blood tide has been making waves on Instagram, drawing widespread attention, according to the Daily Mail.
The stunning transformation is caused by the high iron oxide content in the soil, which gives the runoff its dramatic red color. “Walking along the shore, you will encounter parts where sand glitters with metal compounds, especially mesmerizing at sunset or sunrise,” the Iran Tourism and Touring Organization shared on social media.
One particularly striking video shows red runoff cascading down seaside cliffs, merging with the ocean amid a downpour, as raincoat-clad tourists watch in awe. Another clip captures a man wading into the vividly colored surf, so intensely red that it looks almost AI-generated.

Dubbed a blood tide, this naturally occurring phenomenon takes place on the Silver and Red beaches of Hormuz Island in the Persian Gulf. The island, often called the “rainbow island,” boasts a kaleidoscope of colors thanks to over 70 different minerals found in its terrain. The red soil, known as gelak, is not only visually striking but also serves industrial purposes, from dyeing fabrics to crafting ceramics.
Beyond its industrial uses, the mineral-rich sand plays a role in local cuisine. The people of Hormuz use gelak as a natural spice in sauces like sooragh, a sour and salty fish paste enjoyed with bread, rice, and other traditional dishes.
