City workers in Maitland recently removed a large sewer blob from a sewer pump after it clogged essential wastewater equipment.
According to city officials, the blockage was found in the Dommerich Hills neighborhood. The sewer blob was made up of wipes, diapers, sanitary products, and other items that should never be flushed down the toilet. These materials collected inside the pump and caused a major obstruction.
Officials said these types of clogs are common and can lead to expensive repairs, often costing tens of thousands of dollars to fix damaged equipment.
To help prevent future sewer blockages, the City of Maitland reminds residents to flush only human waste and toilet paper. Items that should never be flushed include:
- Disposable diapers
- Tampons and applicators
- Sanitary pads
- Cotton balls and cotton swabs
- Condoms
- Cleaning wipes, including those labeled flushable
- Dental floss
- Facial tissues
- Contact lenses
- Bandages and medical wraps
- Paint, solvents, and other chemicals
- Pet waste and cat litter
- Grease, fats, and cooking oils
Proper disposal of these items can help protect the public sewer system, reduce maintenance costs, and prevent future sewer pump failures.
