Police in Phoenixville are actively looking for drunk volunteers. The idea sounds like something cooked up late at night or maybe during an April Fool’s brainstorm, but it’s real, and they’re serious about it.
Here’s how it works. The department will supply alcohol and snacks, while officers stay completely sober and observe. The goal isn’t entertainment—it’s training. These drunk volunteers help officers practice field sobriety tests and similar situations in a controlled environment. A bit unusual, sure, but not new either… these “wet labs” have existed for years, even if many locals are just now hearing about them.
At first, people online didn’t buy it. Some thought it was a joke—honestly, who wouldn’t? A police department asking for drunk volunteers feels like a headline that writes itself. But no punchline followed. Just instructions.
Details are still a little fuzzy. Police haven’t said what kind of alcohol will be served—beer, wine, something stronger? That part hangs in the air, like an unfinished sentence. Still, the structure is strict. Participants are tested before drinking (so no pre-gaming), and then monitored throughout to reach specific intoxication levels. It’s controlled, measured… almost clinical, despite the odd premise.
The sessions are scheduled for May 5 through May 7, running from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Anyone interested needs to contact Officer Matthew Fusco at Mfusco @ phoenixville.org and complete a class enrollment form.
If selected, make sure you have a designated driver to get home.
