Veggie Instruments And A Guinness World Record

Posted on March 9, 2025April 3, 2025 by Strange Days

Turns out, you don’t need brass, wood, or even strings to make music—just a trip to the produce aisle.

A one-of-a-kind musical group, The Vegetable Orchestra, recently set a world record for the most concerts performed by a band that exclusively plays veggie instruments. That’s right—every single sound they create comes from fresh, hand-carved vegetables.

Smashing Records (and Maybe a Few Eggplants)

Founded in Vienna, Austria, in 1998, this 11-member ensemble has played a whopping 344 concerts, earning them a coveted spot in the Guinness World Records. Their toolkit of veggie instruments includes everything from a carrot recorder and a radish bass flute to a cucumberphone (yes, that’s a thing) and a leek violin. Percussion? That’s handled with eggplants and other surprisingly rhythmic vegetables.

See them on Youtube here.

According to the orchestra, these instruments create sounds unlike anything produced by traditional instruments. “You can hear the difference,” their website explains. “Sometimes it sounds like animals, sometimes like abstract noises—something completely unique.”

A Soundtrack That’s Always Fresh

One challenge of working with veggie instruments? They don’t last long. Instruments dry out, crack, or break mid-performance, meaning the musicians have to be ready to improvise. And just to keep things interesting, they’re always inventing new instruments, experimenting with the way different vegetables resonate.

But their performances don’t just end with music. After the show, the audience is treated to a soup made from the leftover bits of the instruments. A concert and a meal—talk about farm-to-table entertainment!

Veggie Instruments: More Than Just a Novelty

The musicians in The Vegetable Orchestra come from diverse musical backgrounds, including electronic, rock, punk, and classical. Their goal? To prove that music can come from literally anything. “Every object has a unique acoustic quality,” they explain. “Each thing could be a tool to open up that point of view.”

And for those wondering—are they all vegans or vegetarians? The answer is a resounding no. “Don’t ask again,” they declare on their site. “We’ve heard this question 3 million times.”

One thing is clear: Whether you’re a music lover, a foodie, or just someone who enjoys the unexpected, this orchestra is serving up something truly original.
